Afghantsi (Soviet War)

In 1988, 10 years after they arrived, the Soviet army began to pull out Afghanistan, having fought – and lost – an unwinnable war.

Veterans of the war returned home after what was deemed to be a crude political mistake. Soviet World War Two veterans were celebrated as glorious heroes. Afghantsi were simply ignored.

Interviews with war veterans who have returned home, and the parents of those who died, combine to offer a poignant and moving reminder of the cost of conflict.

This award-winning documentary from acclaimed writer and director Peter Kosminsky shows how Soviet conscripts became bogged down in an unwinnable war, and offers a timely commentary on British military commitment in that war-torn land.
